The size of the mannequin is an important indicator
In this article, we will tell you how to choose the right professional tailor’s mannequin with fixed dimensions. It is impossible to change the dimensions on such a mannequin, and if your dimensions differ from the conventional ones, we recommend choosing the mannequin that is closest in size.
When choosing
remember that the main measurement for shoulder products (dresses, blouses, jackets, coats) is the chest girth (OG), and for the waste products (skirts, trousers, shorts) – the hip girth (OB). Also of no small importance are the measurements of DTS (Length to the waist of the back) and Accident (Length to the waist of the front).
These are important balance measurements that determine the position of the level of the armhole, waist, and hip lines in the product. That is why, when choosing a mannequin, it is important to pay attention not only to measurements of Girths but also to Lengths – they may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.
The ability to conveniently put the product on the mannequin
There are soft dummies made of a material that can be easily compressed to put on an inextensible product. After all, a mannequin is not a model and cannot raise its arms and reduce the shoulder span, which is why it is often difficult to pull certain types of clothing onto a mannequin. You should also consider mannequin head size as it should be wide enough to conveniently put clothing on.
Removable cover
Over the form, professional tailor’s mannequins are covered with covers that can be easily removed and cleaned if necessary. Covers come with or without a base grid applied (with applied baselines). The basic mesh greatly simplifies the work of the tailor and allows you to achieve the perfect result. In one of our previous tutorials, we gave you instructions on how to apply a base mesh to a mannequin.
The cover is one of the important indicators of the quality of the mannequin. Most manufacturers cover mannequins with cotton fabric. Such a fabric does not slip, it is well cleaned, and punctures from pins and needles do not remain on it. Less expensive lines of mannequins can be upholstered in knitted synthetic fabric. In standard models, the fabric is used in two colors – light and black. Manufacturers of expensive display mannequins use velvet or designer fabrics.
Mannequin stand
Do not underestimate such an important detail of a mannequin as a stand. When buying, check the mannequin for stability, because if every touch violates its stability, it will be extremely difficult to work with such a mannequin. In addition, wooden tripod stands often break. Therefore, the best choice would be a metal molded stand. The presence of removable wheels is another plus for dummies that need to be constantly moved.
Ability to iron on a mannequin
Steaming and ironing products directly on the mannequin is sometimes very important. Therefore, when choosing a mannequin, take an interest in the quality of the base and mannequin cover – can they withstand high temperatures and steam.
